‘Hansel & Gretel’ Gets A Terrifying Dark Twist In New ‘Gretel & Hansel’ Trailer
The classic fairytale gets a grim update in a new trailer for Gretel & Hansel, which stars IT’s Sophia Lillis and Samuel Leakey.
Set to hit theaters on 31 January, the film sees 16-year-old Gretel and eight-year-old Hansel being turned out of their home and having to fend for themselves.
Loosely following the premise of the tale, the trailer shows the two hungry siblings stumbling across a foreboding home that “smells of cake.” Hansel then sneaks into the house and marvels at the sight of a feast laid out before him.
Gretel soon spots a witch, and throws a rock from the outside. The witch, named Holda, then walks out to deliver a message. “I’d hate for you to start something you can’t stop,” Holda declares, and welcomes the siblings inside her house.
Other scenes in the trailer show the siblings noticing pentagrams carved in the trees surrounding the house, as well as shoes oddly hanging from the tree branches.
The footage then wraps up with other obscure shots including a man placing a steel rod in his mouth, and the phrase, “The story you know hides a secret.” One part shows Holda saying, “All that is left is to make him delicious,” while pulling threads of hair out of her mouth.
