‘BAFTAsSoWhite’ Trends On Twitter After Awards Fail To Recognize Actors Of Color

The hashtag ‘#BAFTAsSoWhite’ is currently trending on Twitter as the awards show has been criticized over its all-white nominations.
Critics and audience members slammed BAFTAs after its nominations were revealed, calling out the event for snubbing Lupita Nyong’o’s performance in Us while presenting Margot Robbie with a double nomination for Supporting Actress.
Other stars that were set aside include Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers, Cynthia Erivo for Harriet and Awkwafina for The Farewell. While the aforementioned celebrities had been nominated and had taken prizes home from other acting ceremonies, they did not receive a single nomination in the BAFTAs.
“Not a single person of color nominated,” one Twitter user pointed out. “No Lopez. No Nyong’o. No Erivo. No Shuzhen. No Awkwafina. No Parasite actors. No Murphy. #BAFTASsowhite.”
“Justice should be served for these outstanding performances that were snubbed,” another Twitter user said, alongside a collage of the stars.
After backlash, director of BAFTAs Emma Baehr told Variety that the organization “would like to have more diversity in the nominations,” but until then, this “continues to be an industry-wide issue.”
“We’d like to see more diverse nominations and we will work harder and push the industry more,” she said. “But that shouldn’t take away from those who were nominated [this year].”

#BAFTASSoWhite they nominated the same white woman twice in the same category so they wouldn’t have to give a slot to a deserving actor of color.
