In ‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’, Carrie Fisher’s Daughter Is CGIed As Leia

If Carrie Fisher were watching right now, she’d be awfully proud of her daughter, Billie Lourd, who continued her Star Wars legacy by playing not just one but two roles in The Rise of Skywalker.
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, ILM Visual Effects Supervisor Patrick Tubach revealed that a number of techniques had to be used to produce a flashback scene in the latest installment. One of them was to apply de-aging technology onto Mark Hamill, who played “young” Luke Skywalker in a post-Return of the Jedi scene, in which Luke gave his sister Leia Organa Jedi training.
Naturally, Leia was also to appear in the sequence, but the untimely demise of her portrayer Carrie Fisher initially left producers little choice but to bring back unused footage from 2015’s The Force Awakens and 2017’s The Last Jedi.
While Lucasfilm previously declared that it had no intention of digitally bringing Fisher to life, it eventually decided to honor the actress by asking her daughter to take on the role in the small sequence. The finalized film sees a young Fisher’s face being replaced by Lourd’s through visual effects.
Aside from the Leia cameo, Lourd played Resistance lieutenant Kaydel Ko Connix in The Rise of Skywalker, as she had appeared as in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
