Netflix Could Be Rolling Out Its $3 Mobile-Only Subscriptions To More Markets

In July last year, Netflix launched its cheapest monthly plan yet in India at just 199 rupees (US$2.99) per month in a bid to boost its subscriber growth. In October, the mobile-only option was extended in a pilot program to price-sensitive smartphone users in Malaysia, who were charged US$4 a month.
Indian customers were also introduced to a discounted multi-month package in December that let new users pay for three months of Netflix at 20-percent off, six months at 30-percent off, and 12 months at half price.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming platform now intends to test similarly lower-priced subscriptions in more markets.
However, it’s likely that the cheaper subscriptions will arrive in developing nations first. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings hinted that the company prices its plans based on how much people are willing to pay for entertainment.
“In the US, cable television costs about US$75. Here [in India], it’s about US$3 to US$5… pricing is very low here, and the market is very large.” he addressed in a recent conference in Delhi.
With the recent debuts of new but powerful rivals like Disney+ and Apple TV+, though, American subscribers might keep their fingers crossed that Netflix will consider introducing lower-priced plans in the US market.
