McDonald’s Japan Is Releasing New ‘Adult Cream Pies’ & Yes, They Are SFW
McDonald’s Japan is releasing its latest desserts pies on 15 January, and they are already getting hype.
The dessert pies come in two flavors: Belgian Chocola and Sweet Fromage. The snacks retail for JP¥150 yen (US$1.40), and are called “otona no cream pie” in Japanese.
Unfortunately, when translated in English, they’re “adult cream pies” and have sexual innuendos written all over them.
“Otona” means adult, and the term is used for various Japanese confectionaries to highlight that the desserts aren’t as sweet. McDonald’s wanted to let its customers know that the pies are suitable for adults, but the name delivers a different message to English speakers.
In addition, “cream pie” refers to an X-rated act, and as a result, the full name has caused quite a stir among Twitter users, who wish—but not completely—that McDonald’s Japan would have consulted native English speakers before introducing the pies.
