The Las Vegas and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) had meant to make its new slogan official at the Grammy Awards, but decided to delay marketing campaigns involving the tagline after the unfortunate death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna.
The new slogan, “What happens here, only happens here,” was teased in a 60-second ad featuring some of the biggest stars including Shania Twain, Christina Aguilera, and Aerosmith among a selection of Las Vegas landmarks.
The tagline was created to replace the city’s previous “What happens here, stays here” line.
Billy Vassiliadis, CEO of R&R partners—the marketing firm that created the original slogan back in 2003—said that the update was made to excite upcoming generations about Las Vegas without “straying too far” from the old catchphrase.
Vassiliadis explained that the firm had to “contextualize” the old slogan and “bring it to the 2020s.”
Following the tragedy, Steve Hill, CEO of LVCVA, confirmed in a statement that the team will be postponing the branding campaign until “a future date.”
“The hearts of everyone in Las Vegas are with the families and friends of those lost, with all of Los Angeles and with his fans around the world,” he expressed.
We are saddened by the loss of Kobe and Gianna. Our hearts go out to those lost in the crash, their families and to all of Los Angeles. #RIPKobepic.twitter.com/UX42Jpqe50
