Tokyo 2020 Builds Sustainable Olympic Plaza Out Of Wood Donated By The Japanese

As the host country for the Olympics this year, Japan has been actively preparing for the big event while partaking in sustainability efforts.
Aside from the creation of fully-recycled Olympic medals and cardboard beds, a new Village Plaza mostly made from wood donated by 63 municipalities across the nation has been set up as one of the facilities for the Games.
As part of the Athletes’ Village, the plaza will be a common space where athletes and their teams will convene during the Games. It will also hold welcome ceremonies and press briefings during the event.
The complex features modern aspects while paying homage to traditional Japanese elements. The floors, walls and most parts of the roof utilize timber including larch, Japanese cedar, and cypress.
Some of the notable structures include columns formed by placing wooden planks at inclines over each other and planks weaved into latticework for the roof beams.
The building was made specifically for the Tokyo 2020 games and will be torn down at the end of the event, with the timber set to be repurposed.
