Shopper’s Gray Mat Turns Purple, Triggering ‘The Dress’ Illusion Flashbacks

A customer at Aldi Australia was taken aback to find that her A$9.99 (US$6.60) bath mat set had turned from a calm gray to a vivid purple overnight.
The customer said her husband had asked her why she had purple bath mats in the bathroom, and sure enough, when she went in to check, the “lovely light gray” hue had seemingly turned blatantly purple.
You’ve likely seen horror stories of online purchases looking nothing like the product photos. This case is different, as the item was purchased from a visit to the supermarket.
“I swear I purchased a light gray bath mat set,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “Can anyone clarify if I’m completely crazy or if these mats change color in natural VS artificial light?”
“P.S. not happy at all with our definitely purple bath mats.”
One customer said she had the intention of purchasing the gray mats, but decided otherwise because “they looked purple” in-store.
A couple of shoppers shared the Facebook user’s plight, describing that while the rugs were “definitely gray in the store” and in their cars on the way home, the mats appeared purple when placed in the bathrooms.
The color mixup has triggered painful memories of ‘The Dress’ optical illusion, which divided the internet in 2015 over whether a striped dress was white and gold or blue and black.
“This is the blue/gold dress all over again,” one Facebook user commented. “I see gray!”
When asked to clarify, Aldi Australia made things even more confusing, and revealed to news.com.au that the bath mats arrive in six shades, including two very similar “lilac gray” and “silver gray.” It’s likely that the gray/purple rugs in question are the former.
