After appearing on Netflix’s
Abstract: The Art of Design, designer and founder of type foundry
Hoefler & Co. Jonathan Hoefler has been sharing more of his secrets online.
Last November, Hoefler rolled out a
collection of tools and lessons about typographic illusions that design enthusiasts can access for free. He’s now following up with a “type clinic” on social media, where he offers free design critique to those who need “a second set of eyes.”
Hoefler revealed that he’s been hosting consultations for awhile, but “I thought I might try and make this a regular feature.”
Co.Design’s Lilly Smith cites that renowned letterer and illustrator Jessica Hische had seeked his critique before. “I have been drawing a single lowercase ‘s’ for five hours and it’s still ‘just ok,’” Hische shared. Hoefler took a look at her work and recommended tilting the glyph clockwise.
Hoefler’s “type clinic” runs in a similar vein as
Stefan Sagmeister’s “design clinic,” where he frequently comments on completed design work sent in by Instagram users. The key difference is Hoefler provides advice for work-in-progress projects.
