Social media’s constant gaze has driven youths to search for alternatives to look well-to-do. Interestingly, they’re not afraid to show it.
A new trend to have swept TikTok, as reported by
CNBC, sees users showing off low-priced “dupes” of products from premium labels like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Cartier and Lululemon.
The news outlet cited a viral video by 18-year-old student Holly Yazdi, who started the trend by showing off a fake Cartier Love Ring that she bought from
Amazon for just US$20, a bargain as opposed to the original price of US$1,650. The ring is a popular accessory often donned by celebrities and influencers.
Yazdi remarked that the ring was a quality copy, as it “doesn’t oxidize and [is] true to size.” She also revealed the very listing that she had purchased the piece of jewelry from, though the page on Amazon has since been removed.
Other places that TikTok users have found to retail convincing fakes include AliExpress and DHGate. Yazdi also flaunted US$89 Gucci copycat boots that she scored from DHGate, whereas the real deal costs US$1,190.
In addition to buying faux replicates, social media users have started crafting their own variations of luxury products, ironing expensive logos onto garments and sewing shirts to mimic items from Brandy Melville.
“I have an expensive taste for an empty wallet,” Yazdi revealed to
CNBC. TikTok was where she found like-minded souls.
