Shell celebrated International Women’s Day by changing one of its gas stations’ logos to read with an apostrophe as “She’ll.” However, shell-shocked internet users began mocking the campaign, expressing that it does very little to help women.
The name switch was set in a San Dimas gas station in California on 8 March 2020, and was part of Shell’s latest
She Will initiative. This particular outlet comprises of two female entrepreneurs in its executive leadership, and is the largest distributor for Shell in California.
The campaign focuses on honoring its female employees while promoting its goal of heading towards a gender-balanced workplace.
CBSN producer Sam Gavin
shared the now-deleted post featuring the mock-up of the She’ll logo, which sparked outrage among social media users.
Internet users started coming up with their own versions of revamps à la Shell’s
She’ll campaign. They questioned the impact for women and called out Shell, a gas company, for contributing to
global warming.
“We live in s’hell,” one user wrote, while another teased, “Girl Power (is responsible for 4°C in global warming by 2100)!”
