Photographer Explains How He Perfected Meghan Markle’s Magical Rain Shot

A photo of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex huddled together under the umbrella in the pouring rain has gone viral for its magical qualities.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first appearance since the announcement of ‘Megxit’ at the Endeavour Fund Awards. The couple arrived at the event despite the heavy rainfall, which resulted in the beautiful picture captured by photographer Samir Hussein.
Hussein shared with British GQ magazine the details behind the perfect shot.
Hussein, who has been snapping photos of the royal family for over a decade, arrived at the event only to be greeted by the gloomy weather. He knew right then that it would be “tricky when shooting flash photography,” and coupled with the fact that the pair would be under the umbrella, having a clear shot of them was especially difficult.
However, little did he know that these factors would produce a “timeless image” when fused together. After he knew where the royal couple would be dropped off, Hussein camped at the official photographer’s pen so that he would be able to capture them head-on.
When they showed up and walked towards him, Hussein noticed there was an ongoing camera flash that came from the crowd behind the couple. He thought that the light could act as a “back light in a studio,” so he immediately maneuvered himself with the flash directly behind them and snapped the shot just when the couple smiled at each other.
The result was brilliant, and the photo came out sharp and stunning. He told British GQ magazine that this would be the “most iconic photo” he had ever taken. With “perfect timing, great lighting, strong symbolism and an amazing subject,” what turned out was a “magical photo” that Hussein ended up being truly proud of.
