IKEA Takes A Leaf From Nature For Handmade Garden-Esque ‘BOTANISK’ Collection

IKEA is hoping to turn your home into an indoor garden worthy of an interior design magazine with its artisanal BOTANISK collection.

The limited-edition range encompasses 15 items handmade by six social entrepreneurs in India, Thailand, Jordan and Romania who have a vision to create more jobs in regions that need them. The series includes clay pots, tool kits, textiles, aprons, and baskets crafted from natural materials such as banana fibers, cotton and jute.

BOTANISK is part of IKEA’s initiative to create more work opportunities for artisans around the world. Today, its efforts have reached 15 countries, with 20,100 new jobs for 5,300 artisans and 14,500 independent farm holders. “The ripple effect improves the lives of 140,000 family members,” the company explains in a press statement.

Diverging from mass production, this line is created “with people in mind.”

“We’ve constantly had to consider that these products are made by people and not machines—and therefore think about how to make it fun and rewarding for the artisans to produce the designs we are after,” details Maria O’Brian, creative leader at IKEA.
