Apple’s 2020 iPhone Will Reportedly Arrive With ‘World Facing’ Camera

After a couple of years with minor changes to iPhones, Apple is expected to debut a rear 3D-depth camera or a “world facing” camera in at least one of its iPhones this year.
A source told Fast Company that the camera has been in the works for at least two years now, but Apple didn’t release the technology because it wasn’t satisfied with the results. It seems to be ready this year, and the current iteration for 2020 iPhones sports the new system, though there’s a chance Apple might change its mind.
Depth cameras already exist in the more recent iPhones to support Face ID and Animoji. The new, more complex variation will appear on the smartphone’s rear; it is essentially a laser, sensor and software configuration that casts light to measure the distance between the device and surrounding objects.
With the new camera, the iPhone could better accommodate Portrait mode, producing more advanced bokeh effects and allowing for more depth layers, and perhaps even let users edit which layers of a photo to be blurry.
The publication notes that the camera will predominantly enhance photo and video effects, as well as help create quality augmented reality experiences.
Apple wouldn’t be the first to introduce a “world facing” depth camera on the rears of its phones. Samsung already has a version across some of its newer models, though Apple could discover brand new ways to harness the technology.
