Sony’s New PS5 Controller Design Has Fans Likening It To Xbox Counterpart

On Tuesday, Sony unveiled its new PS5 controller. Called DualSense, the PS5 wireless controller is said to retain the best features of the DualShock 4 while adding new unique ones.

“We adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud,” the company said in a blog post. “We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions.”

Sony updated the grip and the angle of the controller’s hand triggers, making it feel smaller than it is. It is also now lighter, and sports a built-in microphone array.

However, the biggest change so far is the design of the controller, which isn’t sitting well with some. Gamers aren’t too keen with the white hue and are expressing concerns about the lack of color-coded buttons.

Some internet users think the rounded design looks just like the Xbox controller, while others are likening it to a helmet.

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings,” Sony’s CEO Jim Ryan said. “Traditionally, our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design,” PlayStation’s senior vice president Hideaki Nishino explained in the blog post.

Listing a few issues with the new look, Creative Bloq cited the “bloated shape” deviating from a “first-party design,” and that ditching the iconic silhouette for a rounded one formed an impression of a “knock-off.”

The all-gray buttons will make navigation difficult during games, and the massive amount of white space made the whole controller look “unnecessarily large,” the publication added.

One Twitter user created a concept of how the controller would look like if it was all-black. Most of the responses were positive, and many thought it looked “much better” than Sony’s, even if the buttons had not been color-coded in the reimagined version.
