McDonald’s China Apologizes For ‘Racist’ Sign Banning Black Customers

McDonald’s has apologized for a “racist” sign put up by one of its restaurants in China.
It was reported that an outlet in Guangzhou, a southwestern port city of China, displayed signage that read, “Notice: We’ve been informed that from now on black people are not allowed to enter the restaurant.”
McDonald’s immediately shut down the restaurant and removed the sign. It also issued a statement, writing that the message was “not representative of its inclusive values.”
Guangzhou is a key port that African traders visit to buy and sell goods. The city has thus become home to residents of African lineage. Unfortunately, hundreds who are living there were forced out of their hotels and apartments following an online rumor that manipulated Chinese citizens into thinking African natives were responsible for spreading the coronavirus.
“Immediately upon learning of an unauthorized communication to our guests at a restaurant in Guangzhou, we immediately removed the communication and temporarily closed the restaurant,” McDonald’s issued a statement.
The chain also stressed that it will conduct “diversity training” at the branch.
