Marina Abramović is once again
accused of being a Satanist after an advert of Microsoft’s HoloLens2 featuring her mixed-reality performance,
The Life, was released.
The artist was targeted by Alex Jones, owner of far-right blog
InfoWars, since 2016 when he linked her with Satanism due to her past work,
Spirit Cooking. Jones yet again perpetuated the notion of the artist being a Satanist after the Abramović-starring spot by Microsoft was unveiled.
The commercial spotlighted Abramović’s first-ever mixed-reality piece, in which she would appear virtually in a physical environment when visitors put on Microsoft’s device, exuding the idea of immortality. However, the allegations led to 24,000 dislikes on the YouTube video, resulting in it being pulled down from the platform, per
artnet News.
Abramović has since spoken out about the persistent backlash in an interview with the
New York Times. She revealed that she has been receiving death threats, causing her to fear for her life.
Ultimately, the artist wants far-right critics to stop harassing her. “Can’t you see that this is just the art I’ve been doing for 50 years of my life?” she explained.
She even requested those who believe in the theories to sit across her much like her the famous
The Artist Is Present work to understand her better. Abramović hopes to be able to finally put an end to the incessant accusations.
The Life will make rounds in America before heading to London, where it will become the first mixed-reality piece to go on auction in October 2020.
