As an extension of its ‘Thank You Meals’ social media campaign, McDonald’s has teamed up with creative agency Wieden+Kennedy New York to create a ‘McClap’ on Twitter.
The ad is part of the fast food company’s effort in thanking the healthcare workers, replicating the claps that could be heard across New York City. It consists of sets of clapping hand emojis in various skin tones, thanking frontliners for working effortlessly during the pandemic.
Jennifer Healan, VP of US marketing at McDonald’s, said, “It was such a simple way to tap into something that’s happening in culture.”
The company also subtly incorporated its Golden Arches in the virtual claps in the form of yellow hands. John Petty, head of social strategy at Wieden+Kennedy, said that the “logo is secondary,” and that the primary focus is to thank healthcare professionals through “the internet’s native tongue.”
The ‘McClap’ has garnered positive responses from social media users, making it “McDonald’s second-most engaging tweet” of 2020.
