The World Health Organization (WHO) plans to launch a COVID-19 symptoms assessment app globally later this month.
WHO’s chief information officer Bernardo Mariano told Reuters that the basic version of the app could help countries that “do not have anything.”
Though the organization was initially keen on working with Apple and Google’s contract-tracing technology, privacy issues have brought the collaboration to a halt, according to Mariano.
The WHO app will be available worldwide, and countries can choose to customize the software further. At its core, it will allow users to understand the symptoms of the virus. This can potentially help people to seek medical help when needed, and encourage more to get tested.
