Facebook & Instagram Create Storefronts So Businesses Can Set Up Shop For Free

As small businesses get affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Facebook and Instagram have stepped up to offer their platforms as online storefronts for these businesses.
The social media giant has introduced Facebook Shop and Instagram Shop, where users can browse and purchase products directly from a business’ Facebook page or Instagram profile.
To get started, a business will first need to create a Facebook Shop page for free. Then, it will have to upload its catalog and featured products. To complete the look of the page, the business can customize its cover image and accent colors. Once the page is ready, users can directly browse, save and purchase products.
Instagram Shop will also allow users to browse products from Instagram Explore, and from there, hop into the shopping sites with the app’s navigation tab. Merchants can feature and link their products on live videos and connect users to loyalty programs for the Facebook Shop pages.
Facebook has teamed up with several e-commerce sites to let merchants use third-party platforms to manage these Facebook Shops, as well as the ads for the Shops.
According to Facebook’s vice president of ads Dan Levy, the company will charge “small fees” on each product purchase. However, the monetization will mostly be for advertising, as businesses can feature their Shops in ads and stories, as well.
