Virgil Abloh’s Wikipedia Cheekily Edited After Donating $50 For Protesters’ Bail

Virgil Abloh caught heat for donating a mere US$50 to bail individuals who were arrested in Black Lives Matter protests.
The artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear posted on Instagram Stories that he had donated US$50 to protesters in need of bail money amid the demonstrations that have been going on across the country. The RSVP Gallery in Los Angeles, where he sells his Off-White products, was also looted.
Abloh posted on his Instagram stories, sharing a screenshot of his donation receipt for Fempower Mia, and wrote, “For kids in the streets that need bail funds for George Floyd protests, matching the local energy.”
Twitter users were irked by the seemingly meager contribution, as the amount he donated was much lower than the prices of his industrial belts and sweatshirts. “Virgil Abloh can put quotation marks on some clothing but can’t put commas on a donation,” one Twitter user wrote.
Not only did he catch flak, but his biography on Wikipedia was also tweaked by anonymous users. His name had been changed to Virgil “Cheap Ass” Abloh, with the description, “Virgil ‘Cheap Ass’ Abloh is an American fashion designer, entrepreneur, artist, and DJ who once donated 50 dollars to the BLM movement during a protest.”
After heavy criticism, Abloh sent out a personal message explaining that he was matching the donations he had seen. “More light before a narrative forms around false assumptions,” he began. “The US$50 donation described in a recent screenshot was part of a matching funds movement of friends I follow in my timeline.”
