Following the unfortunate death of
George Floyd, people have been stepping up to fight for racial equality. With the internet as a central platform for resources, many feel more can be done to disseminate useful and credible information to the masses.
Instagram users are now asking the platform to make its ‘Swipe-Up’ feature an essential tool, so activists can share useful resources in their Instagram stories.
The feature is currently only available as a marketing tool for verified users or accounts with over 10,000 followers. However, the need for trustworthy organizations and fundraisers to be accessible by everyone is now more critical than ever.
Twitter user @wedecideit thus created a
petition for the tool to be made available for all users.
Other Twitter users are lamenting the struggles of having to direct followers to their Instagram bios to open a link, which is a comparably inconvenient two-step process.
One user wrote, “I literally just created [Link tool]
Linktr.ee because I wanted to link petitions but couldn’t. So, now you have to do extra three clicks to get to the petition. Please release swipe ups for all!”
Internet users are addressing the need for the tool to the head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, as it could help protestors stay informed, as well as drive donations to various causes amid the
pandemic.
