Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have joined many other celebrities to use their platforms to advocate change.
Following the death of George Floyd, Lively admitted that she and her husband have been “uninformed about how deeply rooted the systemic racism is” and wish to do better.
The couple also promised to raise their children to be anti-racist and educate them about injustice. “We’ve never had to worry about preparing our kids for different rules of law or what might happen if we’re pulled over in a car,” Lively said. “We can’t imagine feeling that kind of fear and anger.”
“We’re ashamed that in the past we’ve allowed ourselves to be uninformed about how deeply rooted systemic racism is,” she continued. “We’re committed to raising our kids so they never grow up feeding this insane pattern and they’ll do their best to never inflict pain on another being conscious or unconsciously.”
The couple also announced that they have donated US$200,000 to the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund.
