Criterion Collection Is Now Streaming Movies By Black Filmmakers For Free

Home video streaming site the Criterion Collection has torn down its paywall for everyone to catch films and documentaries made by black filmmakers in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The lineup of movies includes works by black directors such as Oscar Micheaux, Maya Angelou, Julie Dash, Cheryl Dunye, Khalik Allah, and Leilah Weinraub. There are also documentaries on the black experience by white filmmakers Les Blank and Shirley Clarke.
From Weinraub’s 2018 documentary, Shakedown, to Angelou’s first feature-length film Down in the Delta, the films and documentaries will surround the lives of black Americans in the nation. The films are now free for streaming on the platform.
President Peter Becker and CEO Jonathan Turel have also announced that the Criterion Collection will donate US$25,000, along with a monthly amount of US$5,000, to various organizations supporting anti-racism efforts in the US.
