Twitter To Revamp Verification Process For Users To Receive Coveted ‘Blue Tick’

Twitter is working on an in-app verification system, first spotted by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong. The social media company has confirmed the discovery to TechCrunch.
This might mean that all users can soon request verification to affirm their identities with the highly-desired blue checkmark, previously reserved to “public figures” as the company wanted to differentiate Twitter users who had influential presences.
In 2017, Twitter contentiously gave the blue checkmark to Jason Kessler, the organizer of a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, per The Daily Beast. Many criticized the company for feeding a sense of authority to Kessler. The social network claimed that the system had awarded the verification mark to accounts for “public interest,” and eventually withdrew the possibility to apply for a verification badge as it assessed its evaluation process.
The new discovery shows that users can soon be documented via new publicly-available guidelines to prove their identity online. When ready, the feature can be accessed via Settings > Account > Personal Information.
