Artists Borrow COVID-19 ‘Curve’ To Illustrate How They’re Powering Through Life

Amid feelings of mundanity and jadedness, New York-based creative Sergio Alonso decided to help flip perceptions of the coronavirus pandemic through stunning illustrations that let you look at the bright side during the ongoing crisis.
Though the virus spread has left many devastated, Alonso carries the torch of optimism through his new project titled Beyond the curve.
Health bodies and governments have urged people to take on preventive measures, such as staying at home to “flatten the curve.” Alonso thus adopted the curve into his artistic project in a bid to radiate hope and positivity amid the pandemic.
Alonso’s project casts a ray of sunshine through its core message: “Even the most disruptive events can bring about positive change, if only one takes a closer look.”
The common theme is visually expressed through traces of the curve, which gets transformed into beautiful artworks along with reassuring messages many around the world can resonate with.
Initially, Alonso teamed up with illustrator Mariah Barnaby-Norris to create some wonderful illustrations, but soon, the project morphed into an uplifting channel as other creatives came on board to share their inspiring sentiments during the pandemic.
Each creation reflects the feelings and thoughts experienced by many in the current climate. Some look forward to new beginnings, while others appreciate their newfound everyday joys.
In one of the works by Barnaby-Norris, the remnant of the curve depicts a couple waking up in the morning. The man in the illustration is seen smiling at the bird sitting on the window. The message next to the artwork reads, “The small things in life will no longer feel small.”
In another illustration by artist Mirjam Siim, the lines of the curve can be seen floating around a lady’s head. The accompanying quote by writer Rebecca Solnit reads, “We cannot welcome disaster but we can value the responses, both practical and psychological.”
More than a dozen of creatives have joined hands to spread a singular message via the project, and that is to “never stop looking for the silver lining.”
