adidas has stepped up to provide more support to minorities by pledging to make a donation of US$120 million to Black communities in the US over the next four years. It will also open up more employment for Black employees, with at least 30-percent of the new adidas and Reebok positions dedicated to Black and Latinx people.

The company revealed its plans in a series of tweets. “It’s time to own up to our silence: Black Lives Matter,” one of the posts reads.

adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted also promises to provide 50 scholarships per year to encourage the advancement of Black employees’ careers. “While we have talked about the importance of inclusion, we must do more to create an environment in which all of our employees feel safe, heard and have equal opportunity to advance their careers,” Rorsted said in the statement. “As adidas, we will create a lasting change and we will do it now.”

The company initially set aside a US$20 million fund, but increased it to US$120 million after staffers engaging in anti-racism protests prompted the company for US$30 million.

Around 200 employees requested the sneaker juggernaut to issue a formal apology for “the racism and discrimination that they have openly enabled and perpetuated,”Footwear News reports. The company has yet to release a public apology.

The new plans were created so minority groups in the company will be given an environment “to feel safe, heard, and have equal opportunity to advance their careers.”

First, we need to give credit where it’s long overdue: The success of adidas would be nothing without Black athletes, Black artists, Black employees, and Black consumers. Period.

Our Black co-workers have shown us through their words and actions what leadership looks like, and the changes adidas can make. They’ve led the response that we will continue to implement together.

This isn’t the final step, this is just the first.
