Google Addresses Why Winston Churchill’s Photo Mysteriously Vanished From Search

Internet users found out that the image meant to represent Winston Churchill on Google was no longer in the “knowledge graph” over the weekend. Instead, a black box appeared after users ran a quick search on his name.
Others also noticed that images of former UK prime ministers were also not available. However, people pointed out that photos of Adolf Hitler and Stalin were still displayed.
The mysterious disappearances left many baffled, who started tagging Google in demand for answers.
Google’s search liaison team tweeted, “We’re aware an image for Sir Winston Churchill is missing from his Knowledge Graph entry on Google. We apologize for any concern. This was not purposeful and will be resolved.”
According to the tech giant, images might disappear temporarily during updates.
Among those who spoke out about the issue was Conservative MP Simon Clarke, who tweeted, “Mind-blowing if this is deliberate policy, @Google. Western Europe would almost certainly be enslaved if it wasn’t for the man whose photo is now absent.”
Google has apologized for the glitch and blamed an update for the error. “If a Knowledge Graph image is missing due to an update, the subject will be named but lack an image in anything automatically generated from the Knowledge Graph. This is why Churchill’s image (but not his name) is missing from some lists. It is temporary and will be resolved,” the team wrote.
The issue comes after Churchill’s statue was defaced during the Black Lives Matter protests in London, where the word “racist” was written on the sculpture.

I just checked this out. Go to Google & ask for British Prime Ministers. Winston Churchill’s picture has been removed.

If a Knowledge Graph image is missing due to an update, the subject will be named but lack an image in anything automatically generated from the Knowledge Graph. This is why Churchill’s image (but not his name) is missing from some lists. It is temporary & will be resolved….

Some have noted that Churchill’s first term does not appear for a search on UK prime ministers that shows an automatically generated Knowledge Graph list. This is not specific to Churchill; a similar thing happens with Wilson, MacDonald and Baldwin….

We don’t have an exact time for when Churchill’s Knowledge Graph image will be restored, but it will be as rapidly done as possible. We’ll want to explore exactly why an automatic update caused it to disappear & see if there are any improvements in those systems to address….
