Madison Beer Sparks Anger After Admitting She ‘Romanticizes’ Novel ‘Lolita’

Madison Beer has caught heat after saying she “romanticizes” the 1955 novel Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.
Beer had made the comments during a livestream video, where she expressed that the title was one of her “favorite” books. When responding to user giulliafran’s remarks “Please tell me you don't romantize Lolita”, she responded “I definitely do.”
The controversial novel is about a literature professor who got sexually involved with his 12-year-old stepdaughter, Lolita.
After the comment was made, social media users were quick to criticize her and the hashtag ‘#MadisonBeerIsOverParty’ began trending on Twitter. Beer took to Twitter to apologize for her comments, saying that she “misspoke” and would “never condone inappropriate relationships of any kind.”
Beer also explained in a now-deleted tweet as to why she made the comments about the book. She added that “people have their own interpretations of the book,” and she has always “like dark stories.”
Other Twitter users have come forward to share the responses Beer gave. A tweet saw Beer liking the book was because of the “taboo relationship, not the age.” These answers have caused confusion and she wasn’t consistent with the apologies as seen in another tweet, where stated she “doesn’t condone or romanticize a paedophilic relationship.”
