McDonald’s Says Goodbye To Famous Four-Story Times Square Outlet For Good

Big flashing McDonald’s lights will no longer illuminate to greet passersby at 42nd Street Times Square, as the former flagship location and tourist favorite permanently shuttered its doors on Tuesday after a 17-year run.
McDonald’s explained that closing down the four-story Broadway theater-style restaurant was a “difficult decision,” and stressed that the plan was made even before the coronavirus pandemic which forced a drop in tourism numbers.
“McDonald’s reviews its restaurant portfolio on a regular basis to make the best decisions for our business moving forward,” the company detailed in a press statement.
McDonald’s said it will focus its resources on the newer flagship outpost on 45th and Broadway, which opened in May 2019, as well as its restaurants in neighboring communities.
Its succeeding flagship, a futuristic three-story restaurant with floor-to-ceiling glass, features efficient and high-tech processes like digital kiosks, in-app ordering, vertical transport systems for food, and table service.
