Florence Pugh Is Sorry For Appropriating Cultures By Donning Cornrows & Bindis

Actress Florence Pugh took to Instagram to apologize for cultural appropriation in the past.
Pugh revealed on Instagram that she had been reflecting on her actions as the world pushes for inclusivity and anti-racism. She pointed out a time when she learned about bindis as a child by an Indian store owner, and had worn them almost every summer since. Once she saw how these “things [were] being commercialized and sold everywhere,” she began thinking in-depth about it.
“No one cared about the origin, a culture being abused for profit. I thought because I was taught about it differently, I was an exception. And here’s the problem,” Pugh shared. “I wasn’t actually being respectful in how I was using it. I wore the culture on my own terms only, to parties, at dinner. I too was disrespecting the beauty of the religion that had been taught to me all those years ago.”
She then recalled the time she got cornrows at 18 years old, and acknowledged the double standards as well as how “Black culture was being so obviously exploited.”
Pugh started reflecting on her herself before expecting a change in the world. The Midsommar star addressed being white and privileged, and apologized for her behavior. “Stupid doesn't even cut it, I was uneducated. I was unread,” she wrote.
