Grand Canyon Hiker Falls To Her Death While Trying To Take Photos At The Park

A woman from Arizona plunged to her death while taking photos at the Grand Canyon National Park, according to the National Park Service.
Maria A. Salgado Lopez of Scottsdale, Arizona died last Friday near the South Rim visitor center. Her body was retrieved later on the same day.
Lopez was said to be hiking and snapping photos with her family members, before she accidentally stepped on a ledge at Mather Point and fell.
The park wrote in a statement that an investigation is currently being carried out with the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Grand Canyon saw 17 fatalities in 2018, and at least three deaths in 2019. The park reminds visitors to stay on the designated trails and walkways, and avoid going too close to the edge of the rim.
Lopez is survived by her three children and husband, who set up a GoFundMe page to “assist this family with funeral costs” following the unprecedented loss. The fundraiser, shown below, exceeded its US$5,000 goal and has amassed US$16,365 in donations thus far.
