Samsung Teases 6G With Its Possibilities For Holograms & ‘Digital Twins’

Most people don’t have 5G access yet, but there’s already a 6G on the horizon. Samsung appears to be extremely amped up about this technology, and has even published a full 46-page PDF predicting what it might be able to do.
The South Korean tech giant expects that 6G connectivity will be ready for the masses in 2028, two years ahead of when scientists believe it will be made available. 6G is touted to feature faster mobile broadband and accurate low latency communications between autonomous vehicles, among other qualities.
Samsung foresees that 6G connectivity will be able to produce peak data rates of 1,000Gbps—50 times that of 5G’s 20Gbps—as well as reach 10 times more connected devices within a square kilometer.
Here comes the exciting part. The tech leader expects that 6G will back computer vision technologies that surpass the perception of the human eye, being able to support equipment combining multiple cameras to simultaneously process data at multiple angles, resolutions, and speeds, while the human eye can only see so far.
It also forecasts that 6G will introduce “truly immersive” extended reality to the masses, and will even be able to generate holograms spanning mobile and volumetric sizes.
Also be prepared to meet your “digital twin” or “digital replica,” as Samsung predicts people, objects, and places can be fully recreated “to explore and monitor the reality in a virtual world, without temporal or spatial constraints” in the future with 6G support. It believes that, in time, humans might be able to travel to places through their digital versions.
Samsung anticipates that the global standard for 6G will start being established in 2021, with a “massive commercialization” arriving “as early as 2028.” According to Venture Beat, this pretty much matches the eight-year timeframe of 5G’s introduction to the world.
