Viral ‘What Animal You Are’ Instagrams Customize Cats, Dogs, Sloths To Your Name

A strange meme taking over Instagram offers to match names with photos of animals, serving as name keychains of the times.
If you’re one of the many who have struggled to find their names on those souvenirs, your time is now. A new ‘What Animal You Are’ trend popping up all over Instagram sees account owners volunteering to give a face to any name submitted to them.
According to Input Mag, the meme started with a @what_cat_you_are account by a user named Dustin, but it was shortly deactivated because the stream of name requests had become too much. The account had amassed over 31,000 followers before it was taken down.
Since then, there’s been an emergence of copycats—pun not intended—and various Instagram accounts focused on helping humans find their dog, sloth, frog, goat, and inanimate object counterparts.
The owner behind the @whatdogyouare account told the publication that she was receiving about “100 DMs every five minutes,” and eventually enlisted her friends to help her manage the requests. Since the time of publication, the account has garnered over 124,000 Instagram followers.
On a more serious note, it’s unlikely that the owners of the photos used have been made aware of their images being featured by these meme accounts, considering the speeds of some of these posts being rolled out.
A number of accounts have been putting their fame to good use by promoting causes they care about, though. Some, like @what_image_are_you, have been directing followers to donate to trusted charities in their profile bios.
You can discover similar accounts by entering “what [type of animal]” or “what [object name]” in Instagram’s search tool, and then try your luck by submitting your name in the pages’ DMs. Many of them, however, request a follow in exchange for a post.
