Protester Confronts Police Naked To Send Powerful Message On Human Vulnerability

A naked protester in Oregon, Portland strode towards a line of police officers wearing only a beanie and a face mask.
Dubbed “Naked Athena,” the unidentified woman struck ballet poses in front of the police officers, unclothed. According to a video clip taken at the scene, the woman moved along the sidewalk before sitting down to pull a series of ballet and yoga poses, all while a standoff between the officers and protesters was taking place.
Her graceful poses were meant to symbolize human vulnerability, a stark contrast to the message carried across from heavily-armed police officers. According to photographer Dave Killen, “Everyone seemed surprised and astounded.”
The officers then launched fire pepper balls at the woman, before a protester rushed in to protect her with a shield. However, she side-stepped him and even reclined onto the street at one point. Killen said the police left 10 minutes after the naked woman showed up.
“She was incredibly vulnerable,” he said. “It would have been incredibly painful to be shot with any of those munitions with no clothes on.”
