Astrophysicists all around the world have created the world’s largest three-dimensional map of the universe, which took 20 years in the making.
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is a project set up by scientists from various institutions worldwide. They have collated data over the years and mapped out the cosmos through telescopes.
The measurements span more than two million galaxies and quasars formed over 11 billion years. The SDSS aims to help scientists better understand how the universe came to be by “filling in the most significant gaps in our possible exploration of its history.”
“The SDSS team is busy building the hardware to start this new phase (of mapping stars and black holes) and is looking forward to the new discoveries of the next 20 years,” the team said in a statement.
