Are you noticing more breakouts since you started wearing face covers? Well, this side effect from wearing masks is more common than you think, but there is no reason to stop wearing them amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Dr Jessica Liggett from Southwest Michigan Dermatology shared with news channel WWMT that mask acne, or “maskne,” is technically known as “acne mechanics,” and it is caused by the mechanical friction of fabric going against the skin. The thing is, “acne mechanics” is not a new condition.

Dr Liggett stated that athletes who wear helmets or chin guards often face these breakouts due to the friction of the headgear on their skin mixed with a “humid environment can create a great atmosphere for bacteria,” leading to more acne breakouts.

Don’t worry, all hope is not lost. You can attempt to prevent and treat these breakouts with some tips laid out by Dr Liggett to WWMT. Check out some below.

Use a clean mask every time

It’s crucial to wash your masks after every use, making sure they are completely dry before wearing them. If you work out during the day with a face covering on it’s important to change it and wear a clean one right after. “Masks should be treated like underwear. It's one of those things you wear once and then you wash it,” Dr Liggett said.

Cleanse your skin twice a day

Dr Liggett recommends cleansing your face twice a day, one time in the morning and the other at night. She also suggested using fragrance-free products for those with sensitive skin types. If you’re especially prone to breakouts, do not use heavy ingredients with cocoa butter or coconut oil.

Moisturize accordingly

Wearing a mask can dry out your skin, so be sure to pick out a moisturizer that can keep your skin hydrated without clogging up your pores further. You will have to do some research on getting the appropriate form of moisturizer that fits your skin type.
