Apple Explores Self-Cleaning Tech So iPhones Might One Day Sterilize Themselves

Apple has been looking into a system to have its products do their own cleaning using heat and light.
According to AppleInsider, the tech juggernaut is attempting to patent a system “to decompose organic contaminants inside product housing or near sensor packing,” while restoring a clean environment for reading the environmental sensors. The framework proposed involves the use of ultraviolet (UV) light,.
Apple described that the sensors in an Apple Watch or an iPhone can deploy ozone generated through UV light to clear out, erode, and decompose “unwanted organic compounds” in the device.
“The UV light rays can initiate a photo-oxidation process, which results in decomposition of squalene,” the patent details.
“Upon reaction with UV light, squalene, shown with its chemical formula, is decomposed into three byproducts… that may not be hazardous to environmental sensors.”
