British Vogue magazine has enlisted 20 inspiring activists to front its cover for the upcoming September 2020 issue.

Shot by Misan Harriman, the series of empowering photos of the activists represents the need for global change in issues surrounding systemic racism, disability discrimination, domestic abuse, gender inequality, climate crisis and more.

Soccer player Marcus Rashford and model and mental health advocate Adwoa Aboah, for instance, were shot in black and white for the front cover, with the words “Activism now” in bold red text imprinted in the center.

This is the first time in the publication’s history that a Black man was featured on the front cover. It also features a fold-out section with the portraits of 20 activists, including Munroe Bergdorf, Angela Davis, and Riz Ahmed.

“At its core, British Vogue’s September Issue is our show of thanks, as well as a rallying cry for the future,” the magazine’s editor in chief Edward Enninful said about the cover.

“When all is said and done, it’s clear that 2020 will be remembered as a tough year, but also as a moment of necessary change. One thing is for certain. The future starts now,” he added.
