Students Collect Their Diplomas In Graduation Ceremony Held By University In VR

The coronavirus pandemic has currently canceled in-person graduations to avoid the virus spread. However, India has found an innovative way to celebrate the special occasion for the graduates.
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) hosted a convocation ceremony for over 2,000 graduates using virtual reality. The university developed virtual avatars for each student, faculty member, and speaker.
The animated students walked across the stage and collected their diplomas during the live event. They even celebrated graduation with their classmates and colleagues by exploring the virtual campus.
The university said in a statement that it launched the online event to replicate the “pride” of graduating for its students.
“Providing a virtual reality experience to all our graduates needed not only highly innovative steps but also a tremendous effort by our professors and staff,” professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, the director of IIT Bombay, said.
