Lara Trump Misquotes Abraham Lincoln In Speech, Seemingly Taking Words From Meme

Lara Trump misquoted Abraham Lincoln during her speech at the Republican National Convention.

According to Trump, Lincoln “famously said” that “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

Unfortunately, according to fact-checkers, Lincoln never actually said this. It also appears that Lara Trump might have sourced the quote from a meme.

The misquoted Lincoln saying went viral in right-wing pages last year as a meme that criticized Democratic Reps Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar as threats to democracy.

Fact-checkers from the New York Times and USA Today pointed out that there is no record of the former president saying those words.

Lincoln, though, had made a similar statement in a speech back in January 1838.

“At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reaches us, it must spring us amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide,” he said.

Hold tight to your freedom.

Uh, no.

Lincoln never said that.

The quote is from a viral Facebook image.
