TIME magazine has unveiled its latest cover featuring the US flag painstakingly stitched by hand.

The publication’s art director Victor Williams enlisted artist Nneka Jones to create an American flag reflecting the country’s state at the moment. Williams came across Jones when he saw her realistic painting of George Floyd on Instagram.

Jones began hand-embroidering the US flag, leaving the white areas like the stripes and stars empty and stitching the space around them.

“Every time she pushes the needle through the canvas, it’s an act of intention that mirrors the marching, the protests, the push to form a more perfect union,” Williams explained of the concept.



“It’s deliberate. It’s painstaking. It’s long. It’s hard. Each one of those stitches is a single person’s story, a single person’s travails. That’s why we wanted to make the stitches visible,” he added.

Jones managed to complete the piece within 24 hours, even though this type of work would normally take months to produce. She ended up injuring her fingers from creating the bittersweet piece.
