Kim Kardashian & Other Celebs ‘Freeze’ Social Media Pages To Protest Hate Speech

Several celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Leonardo DiCaprio are standing up against hate speech and misinformation on social media platforms by joining the #StopHateForProfit campaign.
The stars involved in the initiative suspended their influential Facebook and Instagram accounts on 16 September 2020 to urge the platforms to enforce policies that will preserve a safe internet space for all.
“I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda, and misinformation—created by groups to sow division and split America apart—only to take steps after people are killed,” Kardashian wrote on both platforms. “Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy.”
Recently, Facebook faced backlash for failing to remove pages that supported violence at protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The event, unfortunately, saw two protestors shot and killed by 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse.
The company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg later acknowledged that the platform had “made an operational mistake” by not removing the hurtful pages from the platform.
The #StopHateForProft campaign was launched earlier this year by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Anti-Defamation League to push Facebook to regulate fake news, and ill-willed content on its platforms.
Other celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, Naomi Campbell, and Rosario Dawson also took part in the movement. Read their posts regarding the campaign below.
