The Tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex) skeletons, dubbed as “Stan,” will go under the hammer next month via auction house Christie’s in New York City.
Stan is one of the largest and most famous T-rex skeletons as it has been duplicated with 60 casts that have been put on display worldwide. The remains, dated around 67 million years ago, show puncture injuries to the jaws and healed break to the neck area.
The exoskeletons were previously showcased and studied at South Dakota’s Black Hills Institute for two decades.
The auction house estimates the skeletons to fetch at least US$8 million during the bidding on 6 October 2020.
The price tag doesn’t come off as a surprise as another skeleton of a female T-rex, dubbed as “Sue,” was sold off for US$8.36 million to Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History in 1997, per the New York Times.
