‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Removed Death Scene Gruesome Enough For NC-17 Rating

Actor Matthew Modine, who played deputy police commissioner Peter Foley in The Dark Night Rises, went on CinemaBlend’s ReedBlend podcast to promote the 4K release of the 1987 film, Full Metal Jacket.
Besides talking about his role in Full Metal Jacket, Modine revealed that his death scene in the Batman film was so “violent,” it had to be removed to prevent the film from getting “an NC-17 rating.”
Modine spoke about the scene towards the end when his character, Foley, was fatally hit by a car and left on the ground. The actor said that the scene was actually filmed with a stunt double to show how the car visually crashed into him.
He explained how the stunt double got hit by the car, which had a “plexiglass thing” on the front. “They had ropes to pull him into the air, but he went up and they dropped him from about 15 feet, and the sound of his body hitting the cobblestone street in front of the New York Stock Exchange, it was sickening,” Modine said.
He further detailed how the film’s director Christopher Nolan had his face turn “white” after the scene was shot.
