Netflix Commemorates ‘Enola Holmes’ By Building Statues Of Famous Men’s Sisters

Netflix UK is marking the release of Enola Holmes by honoring real-life sisters of famous men.
Enola Holmes, which stars Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin, has landed on Netflix, and the action comedy follows the story of famous detective Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister as she works to solve a mysterious case on her own.
Netflix decided to celebrate the show by erecting a golden statue of fictional character Enola Holmes next to the statue of Sherlock Holmes on Marylebone Road in London.
The streaming platform has also planted various statues across the UK to honor real women whose achievements were overshadowed by their famous brothers. These include Frances Dickens, the sister of Charles Dickens, and Princess Helena Victoria, sister of King Edward VII.
“Frances Dickens was a talented pianist and singer who studied at the Royal Academy of Music under a former pupil of Beethoven,” Netflix described. “Frances was so gifted, the Dickens family prioritized her education over Charles’ as they could only afford school fees for one child.” Her statue can be found in Portsmouth, opposite the one of her brother Charles.
Poet Thomas Hardy’s sister, Mary, is also part of Netflix’s effort. Mary “attended higher education and worked for several years as a teacher before being appointed Headmistress of Piddlehinton Village School. This was a significant achievement for any woman at the time, earning her much respect.”
