Facebook has blocked a photo of onions on its platform, branding it “overtly sexual.”
The offending image was posted to the Facebook page of Gaze Seed Company and it showed a handful of white onions placed in a basket.
Unfortunately, one of the page’s members reported the snap as “inappropriate,” causing Facebook to swoop in and take action. The onions in the ad were mistaken as breasts and said to be positioned in a “suggestive manner,”
CBC News reported.
“So, we just got notified by Facebook that the photo used by Facebook that the photo used for our Walla Walla Onion seed is ‘Overtly Sexual’,” Gaze notified users on its page. “[The photo] therefore cannot be advertised to be sold on their platform.
The company also included a screengrab of Facebook’s response to its harmless photo. Manager at the firm Jackson McLean told
New York Post, “I guess something about the two round shapes that could be misconstrued as boobs or something, nude in some way.”
“You’d have to have a pretty active imagination to look at that and get something sexual out of it,” McLean added.
Facebook has rescinded its ban on the photo and admitted to the move being a mistake,
National Post reported. “We use automated technology to keep nudity off our apps, but sometimes it doesn’t know a walla walla onion from a, well, you know,” a representative for Facebook Meg Sinclair said. “We restored the ad and are sorry for the business’ trouble.”
