The team behind ColdFusion has created a 17-minute video detailing how a garage startup became the behemoth it is today.
Founders of Adobe John Warnock and Charles Geschke created their own business after their former employer Xerox Parc refused to commercialize the technology they developed, called PostScript. Today, PostScript is still the graphics industry’s standard for printers.
According to the founders, Adobe is the name of a creek in Los Altos, California, that ran behind Warnock’s house. The first logo was originally designed by Warnock’s wife, who is a graphic artist.
The duo took a huge risk in the past, which led to the success they have today. At that time, dot-matrix printers were the norm in the industry. These printers produced shapes by printing out dots, but were unable to properly replicate images and typography, resulting in blocky and imprecise shapes.
Thanks to the Adobe founders and the postscript code they founded, the next generation of printers were able to overcome the issue. Warnock and Geschke paved the way to the computerization of graphic art.
The video also shows how the founders turned down a buyout offer from Steve Jobs, and how one of them was taken hostage for ransom. Watch it below.
