Can you tell the difference between 1080p and 8K?
This is the question YouTuber Matti Haapoja decided to explore in his latest video, which began with a sequence shot using a mix of 8K footage shot on the Canon EOS R5 and 1080p. There were no labels to distinguish the different clips, so it might be hard to tell them apart.
Haapoja watched the edited video of himself on various screens—3K 16” MacBook Pro, a 32” Apple 6K XDR monitor and the 4K LG CX 65” OLEDTV—and said he noticed the difference between certain clips based on its resolution. Later on, he revealed what resolution each of the clips was shot in and why some were more prominent than others.
Haapoja also cheekily explained that the video wasn’t just about the comparison of 8K versus 1080p. He also mixed in some 720p footage and 4K clips to see how each of them stood up against the other resolutions. He also wanted to find out if the resolution in the 4K shots leaned more towards 8K or 1080p, in terms of detail.
However, he admitted that the footage shot on 4K wasn’t at the highest quality setting.
If you’re keen to see the variability, make sure you are watching it on a big screen instead of your smartphone, because chances are they’ll all look the same.
