The Berlin tourism authority’s latest ad did not sit well with the public, as it took an unusual approach to encourage mask-wearing.
The ad, titled We Stick to the Corona Rules, involves an image of an elderly woman swearing while donning a floral-patterned face mask. In case the message isn’t clear, she also gives a middle finger to those who refuse to wear face coverings.
The campaign comes with the slogan, “The raised index finger for all those without a mask.” The ad, which was created by the Berlin Senate and Visit Berlin, was published in the local newspaper, and quickly generated buzz online.
Visit Berlin’s spokesperson Christian Tänzler defended the ad, claiming that the “provocative motif” is meant to highlight the issue of anti-maskers. According to the BBC, Tänzler said, “Most Berliners and our guests respect and follow the corona rules but some people don’t. These people risk the lives of older people and people from the at-risk community.”
Editor of Berlin’s Der Tagesspiegel newspaper Lorenz Maroldt also took issue with the spot. He thought the ad would work out well “without the dysfunctional corona-politics of the Senate as a contrast to it.”
“The Senate seem to think that insulting people is more succeful than strict, clear rules with efficient controls. They failed with that completely,” he said.
